Surplus Jouissance

In simple terms, “Surplus Jouissance” refers to an excess or satisfaction that is beyond pleasure and need. Lacan argues that the experience of human desire is not limited to the pursuit of pleasure or the satisfaction of basic needs, but involves an excess that can never be fully satisfied. This excess is often associated with a type of suffering or anguish, as human desire is complex and can never be completely satisfied. The “Surplus Jouissance” is related to Lacan’s concept of “object a”, which is an imaginary object that represents what is lacking in desire and that feeds human desire. This object is unattainable, and it is what leads people to constantly seek the satisfaction of their desires.

The analyst performs the function of pure desiring condition (pure desiring subject), and interrogates the subject in his division, precisely at those points where the cleavage between the conscious and the unconscious appears: slips of the tongue, faulty and involuntary acts, unintelligible speech, dreams , etc. In this way, the analyst leads the patient to work, to associate, and the product of this arduous association is a new master signifier. The patient, in a way, “expels” a master signifier that has not yet been related to any other signifier.

Shame

Shame is the typical affect of the situation where one is denounced by knowledge. In shame, what should remain half-known, or half-known, becomes exposed, becomes all-known by the Other. Secrecy is a condition of shame. Let us remember that together with guilt and disgust , shame forms the trio of affects inherited from theOedipus complex. Shame is the feeling of exclusion and segregation inherent to the civilizing process
